NOBA 2022: McDougall Energy is the Company of the Year (51+ employees)

Marketer and distributor of propane, fuels and lubricants is based in Sault Ste. Marie

Despite a global disruption in the fuel industry over the past year, McDougall Energy has its eyes set on a sustained period of growth in Ontario.

Now in its third generation of family ownership, the Sault Ste. Marie-based company is dedicated to maintaining the same excellence in service and customer satisfaction that its predecessors have built since 1949.

Through the hard work of its team, McDougall Energy has been able to prosper and adapt to the challenging business landscape that has emerged. The marketer and distributor of propane, fuels, and lubricants closed eight acquisitions since 2020, expanding its geographical footprint into new and existing regions of Eastern and Southwestern Ontario.

Leveraging its supplier agreements with Imperial Oil and Shell, the company markets and distributes top brands and quality products from Esso, Mobil, and Shell to customers in Ontario and Western Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. McDougall Energy also owns and operates a network of retail fuel stations and its proprietary Pump brand.

Despite its growth across new regions of Canada, Northern Ontario remains one of the largest beneficiaries of the company’s success through ongoing job creation, community investment, and economic development. The Company is proud of its Northern roots, maintaining its Corporate Head Office in Sault Ste. Marie.

“The vision of McDougall Energy is to become Canada’s largest, most diversified, 100 per cent family-owned, privately held downstream distributor,” the company said in a statement.

The company has even drawn the attention of business leaders. Deloitte, an international auditor and financial consultancy group, has consecutively named McDougall Energy one of Canada’s Best Managed companies since 2011, retaining its Platinum Club Status in 2022.

But McDougall Energy’s commitment doesn’t stop on the ledger sheet.

As one of its pillars of growth, the company said it continually seeks out new partnerships in the community, with an eye on giving back to the region that contributed to its own growth. “When doing business locally, we seek to work with local vendors as much as feasibly possible (printing, construction, design, marketing, financial and operational business needs),” the company said.

“This reinvestment in our community business partners is intentional and one that we are committed to.” McDougall Energy also invests largely in their home community of Sault Ste Marie, and Northern Ontario, through its Community Investment Program. “Giving back to the communities we serve has always been important to the McDougall family,” the company said. “We continue to invest in community-building initiatives and programs that support the following key areas: education, health care, youth team sports, animal welfare, and food banks.”
